In 1849, in the year that Barbara v Geissen was born, on January 23rd, British-born Elizabeth Blackwell became a doctor in the U.S. She earned a medical degree at the Geneva Medical College in New York. Blackwell was the first female doctor with a degree in the U.S.

In 1861, at the age of just 12 years old, Barbara was alive when The Royal Seminary (Sweden) became the first institute of its kind in Sweden to be open to women, allowing women to obtain a teaching degree.

In 1883, she was 34 years old when on May 24th, the Brooklyn Bridge - one of the oldest bridges in the US - was opened to traffic. Bridge construction began in 1869 and took 14 years to complete.

In 1891, Barbara was 42 years old when on June 25th, in the July issue of The Strand Magazine in London, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character Sherlock Holmes appeared in a series of short stories for the first time. Doyle eventually wrote 4 novels and 56 short stories with Holmes as the main character.

In 1927, in the year of Barbara v Geissen's passing, aviator and media darling Charles Lindbergh, age 25, made the first successful solo TransAtlantic flight. "Lucky Lindy" took off from Long Island in New York and flew to Paris, covering  3,600 statute miles and flying for 33 1⁄2-hours. His plane "The Spirit of St. Louis" was a fabric-covered, single-seat, single-engine "Ryan NYP" high-wing monoplane designed by both Lindbergh and the manufacturer's chief engineer.
