Rev. Bee Solomon Locher, 85, of Burke, South Dakota, died Tuesday in Burke. He was formerly a barber in Mt. Vernon and for the past several years had served as a Methodist minister in Nebraska and South Dakota. Funeral services and burial will be held Friday in Burke. Rev. Locher was born in Bonnie, Illinois, the son of Edward F. and Mary Jane (Wilson) Locher. He married Dorothy Leona Armstrong, who survives. Other survivors Include a daughter, Mrs. Rachel Bee Mullenbach of Rochester. Minn.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Fern Hale and Mrs. Leona Jane "Nona" Cook, both of Bonnie; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded In death by a son, Robert Lee Locher.

In 1890, in the year that Bee Solomon Locher was born, on October 9th, in Satory, France, the first fixed-wing, steam powered aircraft flew. "Ader √Čole" flew, uncontrolled, for about 160 ft. at a height of just under 8 inches off the ground.

In 1928, at the age of 38 years old, Bee was alive when Mickie Mouse was born! He first appeared in Disney's Steamboat Willie, along with Minnie. Although they were in two previous shorts, this was the first to be distributed. Steamboat Willie took advantage of the new technology and was a "talkie" - music was coordinated with the animation. It became the most popular cartoon of its day.

In 1955, at the age of 65 years old, Bee was alive when on September 30th, movie star James Dean, 24, died in a car accident. He was headed in his new Porsche 550 to a race in Salinas California when, traveling at 85 mph, he collided with a 1950 Ford Tudor, also speeding, driven by a 23 year old college student. Dean died, his passenger and the other driver survived.

In 1963, when he was 73 years old, on November 22nd, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson became the 36th President of the United States when President John Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas. Johnson was sworn in on the plane carrying Kennedy's body back to Washington D.C.

In 1976, in the year of Bee Solomon Locher's passing, The United States celebrated the Bicentennial of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It was a year long celebration, with the biggest events taking place on July 4th.
