He had siblings Robert Eli Hearn Jnr., Mary Jane Hearn, Adelaide Helena (Hearn) Smith, Edith Sophia (Hearn) Clarke, George Hearn, Henry Hearn, Violet Letisha (Hearn) Dunn, Ernest Edward Hearn, Sydney Hearn, Marjorie May Hearn, Bertha Ann Hearn, and Christina Dora (Hearn) McKay. He married Sybil Sibine (Sebina) Hearn ( Mark, and had children Cyril Benjamin Hearn and Gordon Ernest Hearn. Benjamin Hearn died at age 76 years old in 1965 in Ballarat.

In 1889, in the year that Benjamin Thomas Hearn was born, on May 31st, the South Fork Dam collapsed. Located in western Pennsylvania, the dam failed - sending more than 20 million tons of water into the towns below it. The flood killed more than 2,200 people in and around Johnstown. The newly formed Red Cross responded to the disaster.
