In 1816, in the year that Bernard Kavanagh was born, on December 11th, Indiana was admitted as the 19th state in the Union. The name "Indiana" means “land of the Indians”.
In 1837, at the age of 21 years old, Bernard was alive when on March 4th, Martin Van Buren was sworn in as the eighth President of the United States. Van Buren won 50.8% of the popular vote over election rival Harrison's 36.6%, largely due to Van Buren's promise to continue (previous) President Jackson's policies. But Van Buren only served one term because of the Panic of 1837 - which was due to Jackson's economic policy.
In 1846, at the age of 30 years old, Bernard was alive when on April 25th, conflict widened in Texas' border disputes with Mexico, following the US annexation of Texas. On May 13th, the United States declared war on Mexico and the Mexican-American War officially began.
In 1883, when he was 67 years old, on June 16th, children at a children's variety show in Victoria Hall began rushing the stage area and lobby for promised prizes. In the stampede, 183 children of the 1100 present - most of them 3 to 4 years old - were crushed and asphyxiated.
