1912 - When he was merely 6 years old, Arizona was admitted to the United States in February (on Valentine's Day). It became the 48th state in the Union. Although he had received a blow to the area a couple of days previously, the connection between the blow and his appendicitis is disputed.

1968 - By the time he was 62 years old, on April 4th, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights leader, was shot and killed by an assassin in Memphis. James Earl Ray was apprehended and plead guilty to shooting Dr. King. Ray died in jail in 1998.

1992 - In the year of Bernard Stensaa's passing, in April, Bosnia-Herzegovina declared independence from Yugoslavia. The newly created Bosnian Serb army then began a campaign against Muslim Bosniaks and Bosnian Croats - killing, raping, torturing, beating and robbing - and resulting in the deaths of over 100,000.
