My Great Aunt
I have been doing my family tree this last year or so, and filling in some blanks concerning my maternal family. Betty was my grandmother's older sister by 2 years. When their mother died suddenly, the remaining 5 children (9 total, with their first born dying at age 5) were split apart. Some living with older siblings, a couple put into orphanages, or became borders at private homes. Betty was placed in a reform school after a minor brush with the law. My grandmother, Gertrude, remained close with Betty into their final years, despite living hours apart. I only met Betty a few times when I was little. I remember she wore a size 4 shoe and intentionally dyed her hair silver, which fascinated me as a child.
I have been told she loved her husband, Joe, and son Junior very much. My grandmother died in 1993, 6 years before Betty.
