In 1818, on March 22nd, Easter Day fell on the earliest possible date in western Christianity. This won't happen again until 2285.

In 1830, on August 31st, Edwin Beard Budding was granted a patent for the invention of the lawn mower. Budding invented the lawn mower to cut the grass on sports grounds and extensive gardens - it was intended to be a superior alternative to the scythe. His mower was 19 inches wide with a frame made of wrought iron and looked much like a modern push mower.

In 1860, on December 20th, South Carolina seceded from the United States - the first state to do so. At the time, there were about 4 million people enslaved in the American South.

In 1956, this was the year that the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, became an international sensation. He began the year as a regional favorite and ended the year with 17 recordings having been on the Billboard’s Top 100 singles chart, 11 TV appearances, and a movie. Elvis scandalized adults and thrilled teens.

In 1970, in the year of Brockwell's passing, on May 1st, US troops invaded Cambodia, expanding the Vietnam War. The invasion of Cambodia was a Nixon policy, although it was argued against by both his Secretary of State and his Secretary of Defense.
