Timeline
1905 - In the year that Carl Richard Tannock was born, acclaimed dancer Isadora Duncan established the first school of modern dance in Berlin Germany. Isadora Duncan, born in San Francisco California, dedicated herself to the creation of beauty - through dance. Her focus on the movement of the human body rather than formal kinds of dance helped to give rise to the modern dance movement.
1920 - When he was only 15 years old, speakeasies replaced saloons as the center of social activity. After the 18th Amendment was ratified and selling alcohol became illegal, saloons closed and speakeasies took their place. Speakeasies, also called a blind pig or blind tiger, were "so called because of the practice of speaking quietly about such a place in public, or when inside it, so as not to alert the police or neighbors". There were a lot of them and they were very popular. And where saloons often prohibited women, they were encouraged at speakeasies because of the added profits.
1925 - When he was 20 years old, in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.
1967 - Carl was 62 years old when between June 5th and 10th, Israeli and Egypt, Jordan, and Syria fought what came to be called the "Six-Day War". The hostilities began when Israel launched "preemptive" strikes against Egypt, destroying nearly its entire air force. It ended with Israel occupying the Sinai Peninsula, Golan Heights, Gaza Strip and West Bank.
1983 - In the year of Carl Richard Tannock's passing, "crack" cocaine was developed in the Bahamas and spread to the United States. Previously, cocaine had been cut with other substances, diluting it. Crack was 80% pure and therefore was more addictive. It was also cheaper, making it more easily available to low income neighborhoods.

Son of Allan C. Tannock and Lottie (Zimmerman) Tannock-Brown
Married to Olga Liebelt April 21, 1928
During his early years on Dixie Mtn. Carl worked the farm. While WWII was happening Carl worked in the shipyards in Portland helping build ships for the war effort. During the Tillamook Forest burns in the 30's and 40's, Carl and his son, Tom, helped with the reforestation of the area. As a commemorative for all their work, you can find Carl and Tom's name on the wall at The Tillamook Forestry Center. After the War, Carl was a Forest Ranger stationed in Ukiah, OR for several years. After retiring he returned to his home on Dixie Mtn. (Hillsboro, OR area) and took care of his Christmas tree farm. During the holiday season right after Thanksgiving he would have a Christmas tree lot in SW Portland. Carl and his wife lived off their farm growing almost everything they ate as well as tending to the livestock. He loved the outdoors and always smelled like fresh cut trees! He was a wonderful big man who loved his family and friends. He is missed every day by everyone who knew him.
