In 1845, in the year that Catherine Mary Rogers was born, on December 29th, Texas was admitted as the 28th state. Formerly part of Mexico, then an independent Republic, Texas consisted mainly of American settlers - English speaking - in the north and former Mexican citizens - Spanish speaking - in the south and west when admitted to the Union.

In 1850, at the age of just 5 years old, Catherine was alive when on July 10th, President Millard Fillmore - previously Vice-President to Zachary Taylor - became the 13th President of the United States. Taylor had become ill with a still unknown intestinal ailment on July 4th and died on July 9th as a result. He had been a little over a year into his term.

In 1857, at the age of only 12 years old, Catherine was alive when on March 2nd, the largest slave auction in US history was begun. Called "The Weeping Time", the auction lasted 2 days. Slave owner Pierce M. Butler - who had inherited the slaves 20 years before but was now deeply in debt - sold 436 men, women, children, and infants, all of whom were kept in stalls at a racetrack in Savannah, Georgia. The people were held for weeks before the auction in the horse stalls.

In 1866, when she was 21 years old, on April 10th, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - the ASPCA - was created. New Yorker Henry Bergh was the first President of the Society and the leader in its creation. He later formed the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

In 1878, in the year of Catherine Mary Rogers's passing, in Africa, the death of the last confirmed Cape lion occurred. The Cape lion was slightly larger than other lions and had black ears, a black mane, and black hair on its belly.
