In 1965, in the year that Chaille A. (Brownhill) Turner was born, on March 8th, the first US combat troops arrived in Vietnam. The 3500 Marines joined 23,000 "advisors" already in South Vietnam. By the end of the year, 190,000 American soldiers were in the country.

In 1978, on July 25th, Louise Brown, the first "test-tube baby", was born at Oldham Hospital in London. Louise was conceived through IVF (in vitro fertilization), a controversial and experimental procedure at the time.

In 1986, on September 8th, the Oprah Winfrey Show went into national syndication. A popular talk show, it was number 1 in the ratings since its debut. The last show aired on May 25, 2011.

In 1996, on April 3rd, Theodore Kaczynski (nicknamed the Unabomber) was arrested. His mailed or hand-delivered bombs, sent between 1978 and 1995, killed three people and injured 23 others. Diagnosed as suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, Kaczynski is serving 8 life sentences without the possibility of parole.

In 1999, the fear that Y2K (year 2000) would cause the failure of computers worldwide when clocks didn't properly update to January 1st, 2000 became near panic. While some computer systems and software did have problems, the panic was unfounded and computer life went on.

What Dressing Up Looked Like In The 1930's
In the 1930's fur was very popular in fashion- so were sequins and a long line - and the influence of movie stars on fashion began to grow. Perhaps the glamor was a needed relief from the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Or perhaps the popularity of that new medium "the talkies" and the ability to make more complex movies, such as musicals, made dressing up more glamorous and fun. The beautiful gowns of the 1930's are still a fashion influence today on the Red Carpet, but some things like wearing real fur is now out of date. June Brides - What Brides Looked Like in the Past
June is wedding season thanks to the Roman goddess of marriage - Juno. Families believed when a couple married in June they would be blessed with happiness forever. Marrying in June is a tradition that's lasted for centuries, and it seems, so has the wedding dress. Today, some variation of white - or ivory, ecru, or eggshell - is the most common color for a bride's dress in the West. In the East, red is considered a color of good luck and the bride's dress is most often a variation of the color. Graceful Fashion - Popular Clothing in the 1900s
Skirts skimming the ground often with trains, high collars, big hats with lots of feathers - sometimes even with whole stuffed birds, ribbons, and flowers, the last heyday for corsets, and the rise of designer houses. 1900 through 1909 started with a continuation of the 1800's and lead to the great profile changes of the 1910's. Women's shoes had pointed toes and there was a shoe for every occasion including Oxfords, evening slippers, and boots. Gibson girl hair was all the rage, and the biggest change for men was with curled mustaches. Discover the fashion of the early 1900's.
