1860 - In the year that Charles Gruar was born, on December 20th, South Carolina seceded from the United States - the first state to do so. At the time, there were about 4 million people enslaved in the American South.

1866 - By the time he was merely 6 years old, on April 10th, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - the ASPCA - was created. New Yorker Henry Bergh was the first President of the Society and the leader in its creation. He later formed the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

1870 - By the time he was only 10 years old, on March 31st, Thomas Mundy Peterson was the first African-American male who voted in an election - a local election about the town charter. Peterson, a school principal, was also the first to hold elected office and the first to sit on a jury.

1873 - When he was just 13 years old, on March 4th, Ulysses S. Grant was inaugurated for a second time as President of the United States. Grant ran against Horace Greeley - "go West, young man" - and won 55.6% of the popular vote versus Greeley's 43.8%.

1946 - In the year of Charles Gruar's passing, pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock's book "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care" was published. It sold half a million copies in the first six months. Aside from the Bible, it became the best selling book of the 20th century. A generation of Baby Boomers were raised by the advice of Dr. Spock.
