In 1841, in the year that Charles Rogers was born, on Sunday, June 6th, the United Kingdom conducted a census, the first British census to record the names and ages in every household and to be done nationally at a set time. A few days before the census, forms were delivered to each home and they were picked up on the morning of the 7th.

In 1850, Charles was merely 9 years old when on April 4th, the city of Los Angeles - now the 2nd most populous city in the US - was incorporated. On April 15th, the city of San Francisco - now the 15h most populous city in the US - was incorporated. Both cities were incorporated before California became a state.

In 1860, by the time he was 19 years old, on February 26th, near Eureka California, white settlers attacked a tribe of Wiyot Indians on Indian Island. Over 60 women, children and older people died. Bret Harte - a writer and friend of Mark Twain - reported the news about the massacre to the papers in San Francisco.

In 1884, by the time he was 43 years old, on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.

In 1895, in the year of Charles Rogers's passing, on September 3rd, in Latrobe, PA, the first professional football game was played. The game was between the Latrobe YMCA and the Jeannette Athletic Club. Latrobe won 12 - 0.
