At 1p, he was sitting for a portrait when he complained that he had a "terrific pain" in the back of his head and collapsed. A doctor was summoned and the doctor gave him a shot of adrenaline into his heart. It didn't help and he was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m. A slow moving train took him back to Washington D.C. while thousands of mourners lined the tracks. He was buried at his home in Hyde Park, New York.

He was released in 1962 after 1 year, 9 months and 10 days in prison.

1974 - When he was 75 years old, on July 30th, the House Judiciary Committee adopted three articles of impeachment against President Nixon. Nixon announced that he would resign on August 8th, the first President to do so.
