1916 - Claude was merely 12 years old when in June, the U.S. Congress authorized a plan to expand the armed forces over the next five years. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.

1960 - When he was 56 years old, on September 26th, the first televised debate for a Presidential campaign in the United States - Kennedy vs Nixon - was held. Seventy million people watched the debate on TV. The debate pre-empted the very popular Andy Griffith Show.
