1915 World Events

Add Colin's birthday or the date he died to see a list of historic events that occurred during Colin's lifetime.

In 1820, on February 23rd, a plot to murder the Cabinet of the United Kingdom - called the Cato Street Conspiracy - was discovered in England. Thirteen people were arrested of which five were hanged and decapitated (some people paid for a good view of the hanging, attendance was so large). These were the last beheadings in Great Britain.

In 1859, on February 27th, US Congressman Daniel Sickles shot and killed Philip Barton Key - a US. District Attorney and son of Francis Scott Key, writer of the national anthem, for having an affair with his wife. Sickles claimed temporary insanity - the first to do so - and was acquitted.

In 1863, in January, British scientist John Tyndall proved the greenhouse effect - which had been widely theorized, but not proven, by scientists.

In 1908, a mysterious Siberian explosion leveled over 770 square miles of forest. There were no human casualties. Explanations of the explosion have included a comet, meteorite, natural atomic explosion, or a crashed UFO. Although it is called an impact event - the largest one in recorded earth history - there is no crater and it is widely thought that the explosion was caused by a meteor exploding 3 to 6 miles above the earth.

In 1915, in the year of Colin Hicks's passing, the Germans first used poison gas as a weapon at the second Battle of Ypres during World War I. While noxious gases had been used since ancient times, this was the first use of poisonous gas - in this case, lethal chlorine gas - in modern war. Subsequently, the French and British - as well as the United States when they entered World War 1 - developed and used lethal gas in war.
