In 1808, by the time he was 39 years old, in late November or early December, the "mystery volcano" erupted. The eruption was so large that it affected air temperatures, the color of the sun, and cloud formations. It is believed the volcano was located in the western Pacific Ocean, somewhere between Indonesia and Tonga. Scientists are still trying to figure out the (exact) where, when, and how.

In 1821, by the time he was 52 years old, on July 10th, the United States took possession of the recently acquired territory of Florida from Spain. Spain could no longer afford to support the area so, through a treaty, the US received East and West Florida. Future President Andrew Jackson briefly served as governor of the territory.

In 1834, by the time he was 65 years old, on March 28th, President Andrew Jackson was censured by the United States Congress, 26–20, due to his efforts to close The Second Bank of the United States - which eventually led to the Panic of 1837. The censure was expunged in 1837, after years of effort by Jackson supporters.

In 1847, at the age of 78 years old, David was alive when on July 29th, Cumberland School of Law was opened in Lebanon Tennessee - the 11th oldest law school in the United States. As of the end of the year, the United States had 15 law schools.

In 1851, in the year of David Stillman's passing, on March 27th, the first recorded visit of white men to Yosemite Valley occurred. The Mariposa Battalion, chasing Native Americans, went into the valley. One man, Dr. Lafayette Bunnell, wrote "the grandeur of the scene was but softened by the haze that hung over the valley -- light as gossamer -- and by the clouds which partially dimmed the higher cliffs and mountains. This obscurity of vision but increased the awe with which I beheld it, and as I looked, a peculiar exalted sensation seemed to fill my whole being, and I found my eyes in tears with emotion."
