In 1961, in the year that Debra Denise Whitney was born, on May 5th, Navy Cmdr. Alan B. Shepard, Jr., made the first manned Project Mercury flight, MR-3, in a spacecraft he named Freedom 7. He was the second man to go into space, the first was Yuri Gagarin - a Soviet cosmonaut.

In 1975, she was only 14 years old when on September 5th, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme tried to assassinate President Ford in Sacramento, California. She failed when her gun wouldn't fire. President Ford escaped a second assassination attempt 17 days later on September 22 when Sarah Jane Moore tried to shoot him in San Francisco. A bystander saw her raise her arm, grabbed it, and the shot went wild.

In 1979, by the time she was 18 years old, on November 4th, Iranian militant students seized the US embassy in Teheran and held 52 American citizens and diplomats hostage for 444 days. They were released at the end of the inauguration speech of the newly elected Ronald Reagan.

In 1987, Debra was 26 years old when on October 19th, stock exchanges around the world crashed. Beginning in Hong Kong then spreading to Europe, the crash then hit the United States. It was called Black Monday. The Dow Jones fell 508 points to 1,738.74 (22.61%).

In 1999, she was 38 years old when the fear that Y2K (year 2000) would cause the failure of computers worldwide when clocks didn't properly update to January 1st, 2000 became near panic. While some computer systems and software did have problems, the panic was unfounded and computer life went on.

Anne Frank's Diary Published in English 65 Years Later
During World War II, one young teenage girl's whole world was a small annex in which she lived with 7 other people. All Jewish, they were hiding from the Nazis. Just previous to this, she had been given a diary and she began writing in it about her daily life. While initially published in 1947, in 1952 her (edited) diary was made into a book in the United States and generations since have been riveted by her insights and experiences. Anne Frank, although she died at 15, is now known throughout the world and she has helped generations of young people understand the ravages of bigotry and hate through her book "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl".

First Responders: Policemen & Policewomen
From traffic control to crowd control, police men and women have always been on the front lines protecting their communities.
