In 1801, at the age of 26 years old, Dorcas was alive when on November 10th, the state of Kentucky outlawed dueling. The oath of office for Kentucky has since said: ""I, being a citizen of this State, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this State nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, nor aided or assisted any person thus offending, so help me God."

In 1817, by the time she was 42 years old, on June 12th, German inventor Karl Drais created and rode a dandy horse - also called a "Draisine" or "Laufmaschine". It was the earliest form of a bicycle and had no pedals - the dandy horse was wooden and ridden by running or walking while sitting on the bike.

In 1821, by the time she was 46 years old, on May 5th, former Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, died in exile on Saint Helena - ruled by the British - perhaps of stomach cancer. Supposedly, his last words were "France, army, head of the army, Joséphine".

In 1839, Dorcas was 64 years old when on January 2nd, the first photo of the Moon was taken by Louis Daguerre, known as the "father of photography". The following June, he applied for and got a patent for his camera - to which France acquired the rights in exchange for a lifetime pension for Louis and his co-inventor's nephew. The camera was available to the public by September. It cost 400 francs (about $50 US then, almost $1270 today) and weighed 120 pounds.

In 1842, in the year of Dorcas Garrett's passing, in January, William E. Clarke - a medical student at Berkshire Medical College - became the first person to use an inhaled anesthetic. He administered the anesthetic to pull a tooth.
