In 1806, at the age of 39 years old, Edward was alive when on May 30th, Andrew Jackson killed Charles Dickinson in a duel. Dickinson accused Jackson of cheating on a bet, then insulted his wife Rachel - accusing her of bigamy. Although Dickinson had the first shot - and hit Jackson in the chest, near his heart - Jackson shot (maybe twice, which would have been illegal) and killed Dickinson. Although it is thought that Jackson fought anywhere from 5 to 100 duels (he had a bad temper), he won a run for President in 1829.

In 1812, when he was 45 years old, on April 30th, Louisiana was admitted to the United States as the 18th state. The area was previously known as the Territory of Orleans.

In 1816, when he was 49 years old, in July, Lord Byron, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Polidori were vacationing in Switzerland, talking about the occult. They challenged each other to write the best horror story they could. Mary (Godwin) Shelley wrote "Frankenstein" - which came to her in a dream. Polidori wrote the short story The Vampyre.

In 1821, he was 54 years old when on May 5th, former Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, died in exile on Saint Helena - ruled by the British - perhaps of stomach cancer. Supposedly, his last words were "France, army, head of the army, Joséphine".

In 1835, in the year of Edward Burditt's passing, on January 30th, the first known attempt to kill a sitting President of the United States occurred just outside the United States Capitol Building. President Andrew Jackson was leaving the building after the funeral of South Carolina Representative Warren R. Davis. An Englishman, Richard Lawrence - who was unemployed and possibly mentally ill - stepped out and attempted to shoot. His gun misfired so he pulled out another gun - which also misfired. He was immediately caught.
