Eileen Constance (Tasker) Benning's History: 1908 - 1987

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Eileen Constance "Connie" (Tasker) Benning's father was William Tasker (1879 - 1933) and her mother was Mary Ann (Jones) Tasker (1882 - 1956). She had siblings Willie Tasker (1906 - 1932) and Ethel Allen (born 1909). My great-grandmother, or "GG" as I called her, was a strong proper Welsh woman. She outlived each of her 3 husbands and just could not take another spouse dying on her. She worked hard in her later years, moving to Seward Alaska as a nurse (she was in Seward during the great quake on March 27, 1964 and her family didn't know if she had survived for 3 days) and then returned to California's Bay Area, working at a hospital in Redwood City. GG was a proper Welsh woman until the day she died. From her granddaughter Kathy: Grandma was married 3 times - her first husband was our biological grandfather - and between 1946 and 1961, each of her 3 husbands died. Later in life, she told me that she had so much heartbreak during that time that she didn't want to marry again and have another husband die. But as she got older, she was lonely and wished that she had married again. Grandma was an active person and always up for an adventure. In her 50s, she moved to Seward Alaska (on her own, knowing no one) and was there for the big Alaska quake. She was working at Seward Hospital and had a funny story about the quake: When it begin, she stood in the doorway of a patient's room - an elderly man. After they both survived the quake, the elderly patient told everyone who would listen that she had "saved his life by holding up the room." After Seward, she moved to Valdez (also devastated by the quake) for a year. Grandma returned to the San Francisco Bay Area (where we were living) and worked at Sequoia Hospital. After she retired from Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, California, she went to work as a companion for an elderly woman in Arizona. The woman was very wealthy, so they split the year between her home in Scottsdale and her other home in Michigan. But the work was physically difficult, so Grandma retired and returned to the Bay Area where she bought a small mobile home in Aptos, near Santa Cruz California. It had been a life-long dream of hers to live in Australia, but that dream was never realized. While she lived in Aptos, however, she became an active member of AA, a daily walker, a devoted yoga practitioner, and took lessons in the Welsh language. Even in her 70s, she couldn't sit still!

62 Memories, Stories & Photos about Eileen

Remembering GG on 1/28/2021
Kathleen Rae (Kroetch) Pinna reminded me today that you died on this day when I was six years old. Now age 40, I still remember very well the car ride home from the YWCA when mom told me that you had died. I believe mom started with "I have something to tell/share with you..." and I interrupted her and said "GG died".

That was my first experience with death. I seem to recall being okay with it, which could be viewed as unusual as we had such a wonderful relationship. The few strongest memories are likely not the two you would chose for me to remember. One is the time you spilled coffee on my head. Okay, ok, it was hot water from the stove but you were making it for coffee. Two is when I fell behind during one of our usual walks around the neighborhood. It was unusual that I was slow, and you realized I had reason since my shoes were on backwards :c)

Note from Kathleen Pinna: The car ride home was from Kindergarten at St. Francis Cabrini. Otherwise, you're right - you weren't upset when you realized GG was dead. But you were very close to her - from the time you were an infant, she would babysit you when I was working odd hours at the emergency room. It's funny that you remember the walk - you were perhaps 14 months old.

Celebrating your Birthdays on February 2nd
Today I found out while talking with Kathleen Rae (Kroetch) Pinna that on your birthday you'd send cards to other people that you met that shared your same birthday. You had remarked that it was rare to ever meet someone with the same birthday and that this was your way of celebrating. Because of this you sent my uncle John a birthday card every year. My friend Elizabeth Mitchell's birthday is today. The first birthday after her passing away.

I was only 6 when GG died...
I was just six years old when my GG (Great-Grandmother) died but those years with her left a lasting impression on the rest of my life.

I recall the day that my mother shared with my that GG died. Mom had just picked me up from the YWCA (an after school daycare) and we were in the car. She said she had something to share and I said "GG died". I remember I was OK with it. I'm not sure if I understood what died meant, or if I was simply okay with the fact that she passed on.

I remember a number of memories about GG. I recall us always walking together around the neighborhood. She loved to walk and is likely why I still pace today around 22k steps while I work and think about things. I remember one instance where she didn't understand why I was walking so slow then laughed when she realized I had my shoes on the wrong feet.

I remember her bringing me a gift of a package of muscle men (an 80s toy) and recall how one of the figures kinda sorta looked like her. I could pick that particular toy out of a hundred if in a pile in front of me today.

I remember she used to watch me when I was young and one particular time where she accidentally dropped some hot water on my head while making tea in the kitchen. The poor lady - I made sure everyone knew.

As with my grandfather, I wish I had the opportunity to know her as the man I am today.

It's awesome that we still bring down that rocking horse every year and use it as a Christmas decoration 37 years later.

It was a long day . . . this was your second party (after a first at Nanny's). You were tired in that little 2 yr old body! :) I can't remember who took the picture??

Such a great photo! Uncle Chuck looked so much like his father.
Uncle Chuck was a carbon copy of his father it’s uncanny! And yes, a photo of my mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, all in one photo. AND the Lorraine apartments - old San Jose- which the Sunseri’s owned. So much history in one photo!
