1969 World Events

Add Einar's birthday or the date he died to see a list of historic events that occurred during Einar's lifetime.

In 1832, on October 20th, the Chickasaw nation signed the Pontotoc Creek Treaty with the United States. The Treaty ceded 6,283,804 million acres of Chickasaw land in Mississippi to the U.S. In return, the Chickasaw were supposed to receive all proceeds of sales of the land by the federal government to private owners, along with expenses for relocation and food and supplies for one year and an equal amount of land west of the Mississippi. The area ceded included the entire northern one-sixth of the state of Mississippi.

In 1855, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.

In 1917, Dutch exotic dancer Mata Hari was convicted and executed as a German spy. Since Mata Hari, born Margaretha Geertruida "Margreet" MacLeod, was a citizen of the Netherlands (which remained neutral in World War 1), she could travel freely in Europe. Her travels (and her romantic entanglements) raised suspicion and she was arrested by the French and found guilty. There is still controversy about her guilt although her name has become synonymous with a seductive female spy.

In 1922, from October 22nd - 29th, 3,000 men of Benito Mussolini's National Fascist Party marched on Rome. (Mussolini waited in Milan, he did not participate in the March.) The day after the March Mussolini went to Rome and the King of Italy handed over power to Mussolini, in part because he was supported by the military, the business class, and the right-wing factions of Italy.

In 1969, in the year of Einar T Larsen's passing, on July 20th, the first men walked on the moon. Apollo 11 astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. both walked on the moon but it was Armstrong who first stepped on the moon. They fulfilled the promise of President Kennedy's commitment in 1961 to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade.
