1810 - When he was 67 years old, on September 23rd, the Republic of West Florida - now the eastern part of Louisiana - declared independence from Spain. The Republic lasted only a few months - until the United States annexed it later in the same year.

1822 - When he was 79 years old, on May 26th, 116 people died in the Grue Church fire - the biggest fire disaster in Norway's history. On Pentecost, the church was packed and a fire broke out on the outer wall of the southern transept. Within 15 minutes, the whole church was on fire and it burned to the ground. Almost half of the dead were under 16 and the cause of the fire is still unknown.

1825 - When he was 82 years old, on March 4th, John Quincy Adams was sworn in as the sixth President of the United States. His father, John Adams, was the second President of the United States and he was the only President who didn't win outright in the general election but was voted in by the House of Representatives.

1826 - When he was 83 years old, on February 13th, the American Temperance Society was founded in Boston. In the beginning, the Temperance Society promoted abstaining from alcohol but with time it pushed for abolishing alcohol. Drinking was a severe stress on many families, with drunkenness contributing to poverty and abuse.

1829 - In the year of Elisha Haskell's passing, on May 6th, the patent for an instrument called an "accordion" was applied for by German citizen Cyrill Demian. The patent described the accordion this way: "Its appearance essentially consists of a little box with feathers of metal plates and bellows fixed to it, in such a way that it can easily be carried, and therefore traveling visitors to the country will appreciate the instrument."
