In 1808, in the year that Elizabeth Coombs Adams was born, in late November or early December, the "mystery volcano" erupted. The eruption was so large that it affected air temperatures, the color of the sun, and cloud formations. It is believed the volcano was located in the western Pacific Ocean, somewhere between Indonesia and Tonga. Scientists are still trying to figure out the (exact) where, when, and how.

In 1812, when she was merely 4 years old, on June 1st, U.S. President James Madison asked the U.S. Congress to declare war on the United Kingdom. Thus began the War of 1812. Great Britain tried to avert the war as they saw it as a way for the U.S. to annex Canada - and they were simultaneously involved in a war with France.

In 1856, Elizabeth was 48 years old when on May 21st, Lawrence Kansas was ransacked and burned by pro-slavery forces. Called the "Sacking of Lawrence", it was part of the "Bleeding Kansas" war between pro-slavery and antislavery settlers.

In 1866, at the age of 58 years old, Elizabeth was alive when on February 13th, the first robbery committed by Jesse James and his gang - a daylight bank robbery - occurred in Liberty, Missouri. Jesse's presence has been disputed but most historians agree that he was there.

In 1903, in the year of Elizabeth Coombs Adams's passing, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company was begun by two childhood friends, William Harley and Arthur Davidson - with help from Arthur's brother, Walter. Their first prototype - a "motor-bicycle" - couldn't climb hills without also pedaling, so they went back to the drawing board, and in 1904 their new version came in 4th in a race. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company were the only two major motorcycle companies to survive the Great Depression.
