In 1839, in the year that Elizabeth Harrie Youlden was born, on January 2nd, the first photo of the Moon was taken by Louis Daguerre, known as the "father of photography". The following June, he applied for and got a patent for his camera - to which France acquired the rights in exchange for a lifetime pension for Louis and his co-inventor's nephew. The camera was available to the public by September. It cost 400 francs (about $50 US then, almost $1270 today) and weighed 120 pounds.

In 1846, Elizabeth was just 7 years old when on April 25th, conflict widened in Texas' border disputes with Mexico, following the US annexation of Texas. On May 13th, the United States declared war on Mexico and the Mexican-American War officially began.

In 1854, when she was just 15 years old, on January 6th, Sherlock Holmes was born. Author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the character who has endured in popularity for over 160 years. The first Holmes book was published in 1887.

In 1869, at the age of 30 years old, Elizabeth was alive when on February 5th, prospectors in Victoria, Australia, discovered the biggest loose gold nugget ever found. Known as the "Welcome Stranger", it was discovered only 1.2 inches below ground and weighed a whopping 214.1 lbs. It would be worth over $4 million today.

In 1874, in the year of Elizabeth Harrie Youlden's passing, on November 4th, the Democratic Party regained control of the US House of Representatives - the first time since 1860. The Democrats now held 183 seats - up 94 - and the Republicans held 106 - down 93.
