In 1819, in the year that Elizabeth Landers was born, on January 25th, former President Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. Unsatisfied with his alma mater, William and Mary, which focused on religion and shorted science, Jefferson - along with former Presidents Monroe and Madison - created a university that had 8 schools: medicine, law, mathematics, chemistry, ancient languages, modern languages, natural philosophy, and moral philosophy.

In 1824, at the age of merely 5 years old, Elizabeth was alive when the name Australia, recommended by Matthew Flinders in 1804, was adopted as the official name of the country once known variously as New Holland, New Wales, and New South Wales.

In 1839, she was 20 years old when in Mississippi the first state law was passed allowing married women to own property in their own name. Other states had previously allowed women who were deserted by their husbands to own property, but Mississippi was the first state in which women could now own and control property while their husband was alive and present.

In 1885, when she was 66 years old, on February 16th, the first Dow Jones Industrial Average was published by Charles Dow, who also founded the Wall Street Journal. The index was 62.76. It represented 12 stocks - American Cotton Oil, American Sugar, American Tobacco, Chicago Gas, Distilling & Cattle Feeding, General Electric, Laclede Gas, National Lead, North American, Tennessee Coal and Iron, U.S. Leather pfd. and U.S. Rubber.

In 1894, in the year of Elizabeth Landers's passing, large reserves of oil were discovered on the Osage Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Previously thought to be "useless" land - not even good for farming - the tribe had bought the land themselves. The discovery of oil made the Osage the "richest group of people in the world" at the time.
