In 1841, on February 4th, James Morris wrote about Groundhog Day in his diary - the first known reference to the day in North America. He wrote: "Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."

In 1853, in May, Levi Strauss & Co. was founded in San Francisco. In the 1870's, the company began manufacturing denim overalls and their first pair of Levis 501 jeans were introduced in the 1890s.

In 1865, on January 31st, the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was narrowly passed by the House (it was passed by the Senate over nine months earlier). The 13th Amendment outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude - the exception being for punishment for a crime.

In 1876, in the Spring, Sioux chief Sitting Bull's encampment in the region of the Little Bighorn River was expanded by "vast numbers" from other tribes. This meeting of Native Americans became the last great gathering of native peoples on the Great Plains.

In 1943, in the year of Ernest Morgan Wood's passing, on September 3rd, the Armistice of Cassibile was signed in Sicily. Under the terms of the Armistice, Italy surrendered to the Allied Powers. After the Armistice was made public on September 8th, Germany attacked and occupied Italy. It took 20 months of fighting for the Allies to reach the northern borders of Italy.
