    Ervin August Schwochow was born to Theodore Schwochow (1865 - 1932) and Wilhelmina Lange (1874 - 1942) om Castalia. Ohio. Both of his parents had been born in Germany. Ervin had two siblings who survived childhood, Andrew and Grace and two stillborn siblings. Ervin Schwochow was married twice. His first marriage was to Harriet Chill Meggit in 1927 in Michigan, and they had two sons named Darwin and Donald. They divorced in 1936. He later married Dorothy May Phoenix in May of 1940, also in Michigan. He died in May of 1978 in Providence Hospital in Sandusky, Ohio at the age of 78.

Ervin and Harriet divorced in 1936, after about nine years of marriage. Ervin married again, to Dorothy May Phoenix, on May 23, 1940 in Monroe, Michigan. They didn't have children. When Ervin was 42 years old, on his 1942 World War II draft card, he was described as being 5 feet 9 inches tall and as weighing 160 pounds. He had blue eyes, blonde hair, and a "ruddy" complexion. His middle finger was cut off at the second joint on his right hand.
