1945 - In the year that Eugene Anderson was born, on May 8th, World War II in Europe ended when Germany surrendered. Hitler had committed suicide a week before.

1949 - When he was only 4 years old, comedian Milton Berle hosted the first telethon show. It raised $1,100,000 for cancer research and lasted 16 hours. The next day, newspapers, in writing about the event, first used the word "telethon."

1959 - By the time he was just 14 years old, on August 8th, Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States. The US flag was changed to show 50 stars.

1977 - Eugene was 32 years old when on January 21st, President Carter pardoned "draft dodgers" - men who avoided the draft during the Vietnam War. He fulfilled a campaign promise with the pardon. But it only applied to civilian evaders - the estimated 500,000 to 1 million active-duty personnel who went AWOL were not included.

1989 - He was 44 years old when on January 20th, George Herbert Walker Bush became the 41st President of the United States. Previously Ronald Regan's Vice President, he ran against Michael Dukakis and won the popular vote by 53.4% to 45.6%.
