Evelyn Courtney Evie passed away Tuesday, January 8, at the age of 89. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Evelyn moved with her parents and sister to Pasadena, California. There she graduated from St. Andrews High School and Immaculate Heart College with a degree in Sociology. While attending college, she met Bill Courtney, a handsome athletic man, and fell in love. After their marriage, they eventually moved to Visalia where they raised their four children and became very involved in the community and St. Mary's Church. At St. Mary's, Evie was involved in the Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters and was a teacher in the CCD program. She also was a teacher in The Visalia Unified School District. She played bridge and earned the title "Master". Bill and Evelyn were also involved in several dance clubs and were charter members of the Visalia Racquet Club. When health issues prevented her ability to stay in Visalia, the couple moved to Cambria where they spent 15 happy years. In 2002 Bill and Evie moved near two of their sons in the Santa Cruz area. While living at Dominican Oaks they enjoyed, "being on a cruise ship everyday." When Bill passed away in 2004, Evie moved back to Visalia to be close to her daughter. At this time, Alzheimer's greatly reduced her activities and involvement. Evelyn is remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all she met. She was a very cheerful lady who valued faith, family, and friends. She is survived by her sons Bill Judy of Evergreen, Colorado, John Carol of Pacific Grove, and Gil Robin of Soquel, and daughter Chriss Don Laursen of Visalia. She is remembered lovingly by her 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A Rosary will be held at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St. Santa Cruz, Ca 95062, on Friday January 11, 2008 at 7 p.m. Friends are invited to call beginning at 4 p.m. A Mass is scheduled for Evie at Villa Maria Del Mar on Saturday January 12, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. and she will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery.
