1862 - In the year that Fannye Adelgunde Selzer was born, on January 30th, the USS Monitor - an iron hulled steamship - was launched. It was the first of its kind in the United States and was built in response to the rumor that the Confederate states were building an ironclad ship - the CSS Virginia.

1881 - At the age of 19 years old, Fannye was alive when on April 28th, Billy the Kid escaped from the Lincoln County Jail in New Mexico. He killed James Bell and Robert Ollinger in the escape and then stole a horse and rode out of town. On July 14th, Pat Garrett shot and killed Billy the Kid in Billy's friend's home near Fort Sumner, New Mexico.

1885 - This person was 23 years old when on January 24th, the Fenians - Irish Nationalists - set off dynamite bombs in the House of Commons chamber, Westminster Hall, and the Tower of London. Four civilians and two policemen were injured.

1896 - Fannye was 34 years old when on May 18th, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson. By a vote of 7 to 1, the Court upheld state racial segregation laws, introducing the idea of "separate but equal" facilities for races.

1946 - In the year of Fannye Adelgunde Selzer's passing, on July 4th, the Philippines gained independence from the United States. In 1964, Independence Day in the Philippines was moved from July 4th to June 12th at the insistence of nationalists and historians.
