    Francis Marion Scott III SCOTT III, Francis Marion Born September 15, 1920 in Yakima, WA, "Scotty" died on February 29, 2008 in Encinitas, CA. Raised in Denver, CO, he received his AB from Stanford University in 1942. He served in the US Army for four years, becoming Chief Warrant Officer in the Chemical Warfare Service. He earned his MBA at Stanford (1947). As an executive with Capitol Records Inc., he negotiated artist contracts for recording stars such as Gordon MacRae and Judy Garland. He was also responsible for Capitol's production of the original Broadway cast album of The Music Man, and the film soundtrack of Oklahoma, among others. For Time-Life Records he created the concept and marketing strategy for the 1971 series The Swing Era. In 1977 he built his family home in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. He was preceded in death by his sister, Velma Scott Andrews (1924-2006). Survivors include his wife, Margaret, children Maria, Freeman and Warren, and grandchildren Elena, Henry and Frances. A funeral Mass will take place at St. Michael's-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, Carlsbad, CA on Saturday, March 8, 2008. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Francis and Margaret Scott Foundation, Box 2107, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067. Published in the Los Angeles Times on 3/5/2008.

In 1920, in the year that Francis Marion Scott Iii was born, speakeasies replaced saloons as the center of social activity. After the 18th Amendment was ratified and selling alcohol became illegal, saloons closed and speakeasies took their place. Speakeasies, also called a blind pig or blind tiger, were "so called because of the practice of speaking quietly about such a place in public, or when inside it, so as not to alert the police or neighbors". There were a lot of them and they were very popular. And where saloons often prohibited women, they were encouraged at speakeasies because of the added profits.

In 1940, at the age of 20 years old, Francis was alive when on September 16th, the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, was enacted - the first peacetime draft in U.S. history. Men between 21 and 36 were required to register with their draft boards. When World War II began, men between 18 and 45 were subject to service and men up to 65 were required to register.
