1904 - Frank was just 1 year old when the United States acquired the Panama Canal Zone. Now an unincorporated territory of the U.S., the Canal Zone had been previously held by the French, who were constructing a canal. This lead to one term and the election of Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt winning the 1933 election in a landslide.

1982 - He was 79 years old when on September 14th, Princess Grace of Monaco (American actress Grace Kelly), 52, died of injuries when her car plunged off a mountain road. It's believed that the accident was caused when Princess Grace, who was driving, had a mild stroke.

"Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was an immediate success and spawned not only sequels but also movies, video games, plays, and amusement park attractions. J.K. Rowling, at the time of the first book a poor single mother, has become a multi-billionaire.
