In 1831, in the year that Frederick Howe was born, on August 21st, in the United States, Nat Turner's slave rebellion broke out in Southampton County, Virginia. Rebel slaves, led by Nat Turner, killed from 55 to 65 people - the largest and deadliest slave uprising in U.S. history. The rebellion was suppressed after a few days and Virginia executed 56 slaves accused of being part of the rebellion although many were innocent. Nat Turner was captured on October 30th, tried, and hung on November 11th.

In 1844, at the age of merely 13 years old, Frederick was alive when on June 6th in London, George Williams set up the first YMCA based on the idea of a healthy "body, mind, and spirit" - what he considered Christian values. Now headquartered in Geneva Switzerland, there are over 57 million worldwide beneficiaries and 125 national associations.

In 1846, Frederick was just 15 years old when on February 26th, the Liberty Bell was rung for George Washington's birthday. It is said that when it was rung, a previous crack was worsened, leading to the crack seen today. A paper of the time said that at "around noon, it was discovered that the ringing had caused the crack to be greatly extended, and that the old Independence Bell...now hangs in the great city steeple irreparably cracked and forever dumb".

In 1857, he was 26 years old when on December 16th, a 7.0 earthquake struck the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies - Southern Italy. It had a maximum Mercalli intensity of 11 (Extreme) and killed about 10,000 people..

In 1860, in the year of Frederick Howe's passing, on April 3rd, the Pony Express began its first delivery from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The trip took 10 days and the riders carried 49 letters, five telegrams, and newspapers for San Francisco and other cities along the way.
