In 1916, in the year that Gaylord A Standley was born, the Battle of Verdun was fought from February through December. It was the largest and longest battle of World War I, lasting 303 days. In 1968, on June 5th, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles by Sirhan after celebrating his win in the California presidential primary. He died the next day at Good Samaritan Hospital.

In 1990, after 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela, the leader of the movement to end South African apartheid was released on February 11th 1990.
