Genevieve Mae (Ulmer) Young was born on February 8, 1922 in Dawson, Richardson County, NE to Nelson Howard Ulmer and Cecelia C. (Smith) Ulmer, and had siblings Caroline Ruth Ulmer and Dolores Chapman. She married Herbert Lee Young, and had children Ray Nelson Young, Wayne Cortland Young, and Charles Young. Genevieve Young died at age 94 years old on November 15, 2016 in Humboldt, and was buried at Heim Cemetery in Dawson.

  • Introduction

    Genevieve Mae Ulmer's father was Nelson Howard Ulmer (1897 - 1972) and her mother was Cecelia O Smith (1900 - 1967). She had three sisters. Genevieve married Herbert L. Young (1920 - 2000) on September 13, 1946, in Washington, District of Columbia (at his parents' home). Genevieve and Herbert had three sons: Ray (who passed in 2005), Charles E. "Chuck", and Wayne C. Young. After graduation from high school, Genevieve worked for a couple of years as a secretary in her hometown, then moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the federal government. That is where she met her husband and stayed after her marriage, having three sons. She and her husband later moved to Maryland and they stayed there until he died - almost 54 years after they married. She later moved back to Nebraska, where she died at the age of 94. After that, she went to Washington, D.C. as clerk typist employed with the Casualty Department of the Army, Adjutant Generals Office. After five years, she left government service as a Statistical Draftsman.

    Genevieve married and had three sons. She was married to Herbert until his death - almost 54 years. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, VFW Auxiliary, and AARP as well as the Dawson Goldenrod Club, Busy Hour Club, Nebraska City Heritage Needlework Guild, the National Quilting Association and a charter member of the Nebraska State Quilt Guild. The Pennsylvania Colony was very important to her. Genevieve enjoyed gardening, crafts, sewing, quilting, and bingo.

    From her Find A Grave memorial: Genevieve Mae (Ulmer) Young daughter of Nelson H. and Cecelia Smith Ulmer was born February 8, 1922, at the farm home north of Dawson. She attended Dawson Public School. Following graduation in 1940 she was employed as secretary to the Superintendent of the Dawson School for two years. In May 1942 she went to Washington, D.C. as clerk typist employed with the Casualty Department of the Army, Adjutant Generals Office. After five years, she left the Government Service as Statistical Draftsman. On September 13, 1946, Genevieve married Herbert Lee Young at his parent’s home in Washington, D. C. They lived in the Congress Heights area where their three sons were born. In September 1958 they moved to Temple Hills Maryland. After Herbert retired December 31, 1973, they moved to Humboldt, Nebraska in August 1974. They were married almost 54 years when Herbert died in 2000. In April 2006, Genevieve moved into Colonial Acres Nursing Home. A year after moving to Humboldt, she became a member of the Berean Church and later the Auburn Berean Church and the Auburn Evangelical Free Church. Genevieve was most recently a member of the Falls City Baptist Church. She had been a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, VFW Auxiliary, and AARP as well as the Dawson Goldenrod Club, Busy Hour Club, Nebraska City Heritage Needlework Guild, the National Quilting Association and a charter member of the Nebraska State Quilt Guild. The Pennsylvania Colony was very important to her. Genevieve enjoyed gardening, crafts, sewing, quilting, and bingo. Her eldest son, Ray Nelson Young of San Francisco, CA passed away in 2005. Her two surviving sons are, Charles E. (Chuck) and Debbi Young, Pasadena, CA and Wayne C. and Dee Young, Paola, KS; grandchildren are Darlene and LB Chandler, Ventura, CA, Crystal and Brett Hammans, Oxnard, CA, and Barrett Young, Paola, Kansas; great-grandchildren include LJ and Zeke Chandler and Justice Hammans. She has a sister Dolores (Dee) and Ted Chapman, Arcadia California and family and daughter-in-law Nancy Goudie, San Francisco, CA. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2016, at The Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Ron Russell officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Interment will be at the Heim Cemetery in Dawson, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Pennsylvania Colony Historical Society of Nebraska. Online messages of condolence can be left at www.wherrymortuary.com.
