In 1804, at the age of 27 years old, George was alive when on July 11th, Alexander Hamilton, former Secretary of the Treasury, and Aaron Burr, Vice President of the United States, fought a duel. Alexander Hamilton was shot and died the next day. Burr was indicted for murder and was acquitted but his political career was ruined.

In 1816, George was 39 years old when in Philadelphia, the African Methodist Episcopal Church - the oldest independent Protestant denomination in the world founded by black people - was established by Richard Allen and other African-American Methodists. It is often called the AME church today.

In 1830, he was 53 years old when 10,000 chests of opium were sold in China - one chest was 60–65 kilograms, about 140 pounds, and was worth nearly $740 in US dollars. This worked out to a trade of roughly 7.5 million US dollars in 1830.

In 1859, George was 82 years old when on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.

In 1860, in the year of George Barnett's passing, on February 26th, near Eureka California, white settlers attacked a tribe of Wiyot Indians on Indian Island. Over 60 women, children and older people died. Bret Harte - a writer and friend of Mark Twain - reported the news about the massacre to the papers in San Francisco.
