In 1817, on December 10th, Mississippi was admitted as the 20th U.S. state. The area was previously called the Mississippi Territory. David Holmes was the first governor of the state.

In 1834, on August 14th, the Poor Law Amendment Act was enacted in the United Kingdom. The Act stated that no able-bodied British man could receive assistance unless he entered a workhouse (a kind of poorhouse). The Act was intended to curb the cost of relief for the poor since workhouses were designed to be unpleasant. Many workhouses used the men as free labor and employed them in such tasks as breaking stones, crushing bones to produce fertilizer, or picking oakum - tarred fiber used between planks on ships -using a large metal nail known as a spike.

In 1841, on Sunday, June 6th, the United Kingdom conducted a census, the first British census to record the names and ages in every household and to be done nationally at a set time. A few days before the census, forms were delivered to each home and they were picked up on the morning of the 7th.

In 1865, on January 4th, the New York Stock Exchange - "The Big Board" - opened its first permanent headquarters. It was at 10-12 Broad, near Wall Street, in New York City.

In 1894, large reserves of oil were discovered on the Osage Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Previously thought to be "useless" land - not even good for farming - the tribe had bought the land themselves. The discovery of oil made the Osage the "richest group of people in the world" at the time.
