In 1808, by the time he was 16 years old, on February 6th, the ship Topaz - which had sailed out of Boston, hunting seals - rediscovered Pitcairn Island. The mutineers from the HMS Bounty had gone there after the mutiny in April of 1789. Only one HMS Bounty mutineer was still alive, John Adams, who had changed his name to Alexander Smith.

In 1818, when he was 26 years old, on December 3rd, Illinois was admitted as the 21st U.S. state. Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Barack Obama were from Illinois. Ronald Reagan was the only U.S. President who was born and raised in Illinois.

In 1829, he was 37 years old when on May 6th, the patent for an instrument called an "accordion" was applied for by German citizen Cyrill Demian. The patent described the accordion this way: "Its appearance essentially consists of a little box with feathers of metal plates and bellows fixed to it, in such a way that it can easily be carried, and therefore traveling visitors to the country will appreciate the instrument."

In 1836, in the year of Hans Hansen's passing, on February 23rd, the Battle of the Alamo began. A group of American settlers were surrounded by the Mexican Army, led by Santa Anna, at the Alamo. The battle lasted until March 6th - all of the settler army was killed. Historians estimate that 400–600 in the Mexican Army were killed.
