In 1915, in the year that Harry James was born, the Germans first used poison gas as a weapon at the second Battle of Ypres during World War I. Subsequently, the French and British - as well as the United States when they entered World War 1 - developed and used lethal gas in war.

In 1926, by the time he was merely 11 years old, on November 15th, NBC was founded. It was the U.S.'s first major broadcast network. Ownership of the network was split between RCA (a majority partner at 50%), its founding corporate parent General Electric (which owned 30%), and Westinghouse (which owned the remaining 20%).

In 1933, when he was 18 years old, on December 5th, the Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified. It was the only amendment to the Constitution approved for the explicit purpose of repealing a previously existing amendment. South Carolina was the only state to reject the Amendment.

In 1970, by the time he was 55 years old, on May 1st, US troops invaded Cambodia, expanding the Vietnam War. The invasion of Cambodia was a Nixon policy, although it was argued against by both his Secretary of State and his Secretary of Defense.

In 1980, in the year of Harry James's passing, on December 8th, ex-Beatle John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman in front of his home - the Dakota - in New York City. Chapman was found guilty of murder and still remains in jail.
