Harry Russell Moneysmith, 63, of 1822 E. 27th Court died of a heart attack Friday at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery. Mr. Moneysmith lived in Des Moines most of his life and retired about a year ago from Meyer Hall, the county juvenile home, and formerly worked for Iowa Pack for 22 years. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and Disabled American Veterans and was a veteran of World War II. His wife, Juanita, and a grandchild survive. Friends may call today at the funeral home, where the family will meet with friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

In 1924, in the year that Harry R Moneysmith was born, J. Edgar Hoover, at the age of 29, was appointed the sixth director of the Bureau of Investigation by Calvin Coolidge (which later became the Federal Bureau of Investigation). The Bureau had approximately 650 employees, including 441 Special Agents. A former employee of the Justice Department, Hoover accepted his new position on the proviso that the bureau was to be completely divorced from politics and that the director report only to the attorney general.

In 1949, at the age of 25 years old, Harry was alive when on April 4th, NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was established. Twelve nations originally signed the North Atlantic Treaty - the United States, Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Iceland, Canada, and Portugal. Greece, Turkey, and West Germany later joined. Today, there are 26 nations in NATO.

In 1968, by the time he was 44 years old, on June 5th, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles by Sirhan after celebrating his win in the California presidential primary. He died the next day at Good Samaritan Hospital.

In 1978, Harry was 54 years old when on July 25th, Louise Brown, the first "test-tube baby", was born at Oldham Hospital in London. Louise was conceived through IVF (in vitro fertilization), a controversial and experimental procedure at the time.

In 1988, in the year of Harry R Moneysmith's passing, on December 16th, 1988 the popular film Rain Man was released. Featuring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. this film brought attention to autistic savants and was based on the "megasavant" Laurence Kim Peek. The film would later go to win four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actor in a Leading Role.
