Henry was a coal miner, the son of Christopher Seddon who perished in The Oaks Colliery disaster in Barnsley, UK. Henry left England and lived in Plymouth, PA where he married Agnes Belle Weir. They had a number of children and moved to the Dakota Territory in the 1880s. They were Presbyterian / Congregationalist. Henry and Agnes are buried in Mission Hill, SD.

In 1838, in the year that Henry John Seddon was born, on May 26th, the Native American Cherokee Nation was forced to march the Trail of Tears - relocating them to west of the Mississippi. When gold was discovered in Georgia in 1828, settlers wanted the Cherokee land. 16,543 natives were forced to march - it is estimated that 2,000 to 6,000 died along the way.

In 1840, Henry was just 2 years old when on July 23rd, Upper Canada and Lower Canada were merged by the British Parliament, creating the United Province of Canada. This area later became the provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

In 1869, at the age of 31 years old, Henry was alive when on May 10th, North America's first transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory, by driving a "golden spike" or the "last spike" of the line. The spike was driven by Leland Stanford and is now displayed at Stanford University.

In 1875, at the age of 37 years old, Henry was alive when on February 21st, Jeanne Calment was born in southern France. Her father was a shipbuilder and her mother was from a family of millers. She died August 4th, 1997 of natural causes - the world's oldest documented person to have ever lived - at the age of 122 years and 164 days.

In 1893, in the year of Henry John Seddon's passing, on February 1st, Thomas Edison's motion picture studio on his laboratory grounds in West Orange New Jersey was completed. The studio was called "Black Maria" and the first movie made and viewed in it was of 3 people pretending to be blacksmiths.
