Timeline

1848 - In the year that Henry Summers was born, on May 29th, Wisconsin became the 30th U.S. state. The British had formerly owned the territory but after the War of 1812, American white settlers - especially lead miners - moved into the area.

1853 - At the age of merely 5 years old, Henry was alive when on March 4th, Franklin Pierce became the 14th President of the United States. His son had been killed in a train accident that also involved Pierce and his wife on January 6 - the only of 3 sons to survive until then. Due to the resultant depression and his unpopular policies, he was not re-nominated for President and served only one term.

1862 - He was merely 14 years old when on January 30th, the USS Monitor - an iron hulled steamship - was launched. It was the first of its kind in the United States and was built in response to the rumor that the Confederate states were building an ironclad ship - the CSS Virginia.

1878 - Henry was 30 years old when in Africa, the death of the last confirmed Cape lion occurred. The Cape lion was slightly larger than other lions and had black ears, a black mane, and black hair on its belly.

1884 - In the year of Henry Summers's passing, on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.
