Timeline

1800 - Hosea was 19 years old when on August 30th, educated blacksmith Gabriel Prosser organized a slave revolt. He wanted to capture Richmond and kill all whites - excluding Methodists, Quakers, Frenchmen, and the poor - and become king of a new black nation. The revolt failed, he was captured and hung. Slave laws were tightened in Virginia.

1821 - Hosea was 40 years old when on March 5th, President James Monroe was sworn in for his second term. Because March 4th - the day that the inauguration was supposed to be held - was a Sunday, Monroe moved it to Monday, the 5th. Also, the swearing in was held indoors because of a snowstorm.

1839 - At the age of 58 years old, Hosea was alive when in Mississippi the first state law was passed allowing married women to own property in their own name. Other states had previously allowed women who were deserted by their husbands to own property, but Mississippi was the first state in which women could now own and control property while their husband was alive and present.

1844 - At the age of 63 years old, Hosea was alive when on July 3rd, the last known pair of great auk were killed in Iceland. A flightless bird, the average auk was about 33 inches tall and weighed about 11 pounds with a black back and white belly. They were most often found along the coast of Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Canada Great Britain, Ireland - and sometimes as far south as Spain.

1854 - In the year of Hosea Barnes's passing, on January 6th, Sherlock Holmes was born. Author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the character who has endured in popularity for over 160 years. The first Holmes book was published in 1887.
