1916 - When she was just 8 years old, the U.S. National Park Service - part of the Department of the Interior - was created by an act of Congress in August. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.

First sent to the states in 1972, the Amendment stated that "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex".
