    Ione McArthur Rigsby, 86, of Albany, passed away Monday, Dec.14, 2009, peacefully at her residence of 63 years. Her funeral service was Thursday at Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Directors with interment at Floral Memory Gardens. Ryan R. Rigsby officiated. She was born outside Salt Lake, Utah, June 14, 1923 to Homer Duncan McArthur and Ida Lenore Perkins McArthur. She moved to Albany as a young girl with her family. She attended Albany High School. She married James Allen Rigsby on June 29, 1941. She was a member of a number of clubs and organizations, where she volunteered numerous hours of service. She enjoyed dancing, cards and bingo. Her happiest times were spent surrounded by her family. She truly never met a stranger and had an abundance of close friends. She could light up a room with her outgoing personality and is best known for giving “sugar.” She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, James Allen Rigsby Sr. She is survived by her sister, Arva Williams (Hillman Williams); two sons, James Allen Rigsby Jr. (Patricia Tabb Rigsby) and Harold Taylor Rigsby (Cynthia Sizemore Rigsby); a daughter, Cathy Rigsby Gresham (Brian Wayne Gresham), all of Albany; three grandsons, Ryan Reid Rigsby (Jennifer), Bradford Hudson Gresham (Jamie) and William Brian Gresham; five granddaughters, Catherine “Shae” Griffin, Teresa Johnson Posey (Andy), Rhonda Renee’ Rigsby (Bob), Tracey Griffin Hodges and Jasmine Starr Griffin; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In 1923, in the year that Ione M Rigsby was born, Harlem's Cotton Club opened in New York City. Owned by a bootlegger and gangster, it was a 700 seat speakeasy that catered to a "white only" clientele. But most of the entertainers were African-American and featured some of the best entertainers of the time such as Lena Horne, the Nicholas Brothers, Ethel Waters, and Cab Calloway.

In 1941, at the age of 18 years old, Ione was alive when on December 7th, the Japanese attacked the military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The surprise aerial attack damaged 8 U.S. battleships (6 later returned to service), including the USS Arizona, and destroyed 188 aircraft. 2,402 American citizens died and 1,178 wounded were wounded. On December 8th, the U.S. declared war on Japan and on December 11th, Germany and Italy (allies of Japan) declared war on the United States. World War II was in full swing.
