In 1800, the federal government moved from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. The site of the new capital had been chosen by President George Washington several years earlier and he appointed Pierre (Peter) Charles L'Enfant to lay out a plan for the new city.

In 1817, King Ferdinand VII of Spain - who ruled Cuba - issued a royal decree that made the production and sale of tobacco a legal endeavor in Cuba. The decree created the birth of the Cuban cigar industry.

In 1850, on March 19th, American Express was started as an express mail service. Henry Wells & William Fargo joined forces - each had a delivery service - to found the company. At the beginning, express delivery in New York was virtually monopolized by American Express - which is now a financial services company.

In 1865, on January 31st, the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was narrowly passed by the House (it was passed by the Senate over nine months earlier). The 13th Amendment outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude - the exception being for punishment for a crime.

In 1892, on October 12th, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was first recited in unison by students in U.S. public schools. Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.
