James Thomas Taylor died in 1869 in Australia at 15 years old. He was born in 1854 in Tara, Australia. He was born to James Taylor and Margaret Kennedy Taylor.

In 1854, in the year that James Thomas Taylor was born, on January 6th, Sherlock Holmes was born. Author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the character who has endured in popularity for over 160 years. The first Holmes book was published in 1887.

In 1862, James was only 8 years old when on August 17th, the Dakota War of 1862 began in Minnesota. Four Lakota Sioux - while hunting - killed five settlers near the Minnesota River. That evening, elders of the tribe decided to attack more settlements with the goal of driving out those who had settled the area. By the end of the year, 1000 Lakota had been jailed.

In 1863, James was just 9 years old when on January 1st, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the Confederate states an official war goal. It also immediately freed 50,000 slaves, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced into Confederate states. The Proclamation wasn't a Congressional law - it was an Executive Order.

In 1864, by the time he was only 10 years old, on February 25th, the first prisoners arrived at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Andersonville became notorious for the conditions that Union prisoners endured. 500 prisoners had left from Richmond, Virginia the week before - eventually 13,000 prisoners would die at the prison.

In 1869, in the year of James Thomas Taylor's passing, on March 4th, Ulysses S. Grant became the 18th President of the United States. Previously a Union General, Grant beat the Democrat candidate, Horatio Seymour, 52.7% to 47.3% in the general vote.
