1816 - In the year that Jane Bain was born, on December 11th, Indiana was admitted as the 19th state in the Union. The name "Indiana" means “land of the Indians”.

1856 - Jane was 40 years old when on February 18th, The American Party, also called the "Know-Nothings" because they were an anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant movement, assembled in Philadelphia to nominate their first Presidential candidate, former President Millard Fillmore. The party sought to keep the "purity" of elections by blocking "impure" foreigners.

1866 - When she was 50 years old, on February 13th, the first robbery committed by Jesse James and his gang - a daylight bank robbery - occurred in Liberty, Missouri. Jesse's presence has been disputed but most historians agree that he was there.

1881 - Jane was 65 years old when on May 21st, Clara Barton, a nurse, founded the American Red Cross. She was inspired by the Red Cross in Geneva Switzerland and the International Red Cross.

1892 - In the year of Jane Bain's passing, on January 1st, Ellis Island opened to process immigrants. 700 passed through on the first day - in the first year, 450,000 were processed. The processing center was originally a 3 story wooden building - with outbuildings - that burned down a few years later.
