In 1803, in the year that Jane Lanyon Nekerwis was born, on October 20th, Congress ratified the Louisiana Purchase. The United States agreed to pay France $15 million for the Louisiana Territory - an area of about 830,000 sq miles. This one act doubled the size of the United States.

In 1825, she was 22 years old when on October 26th, the Erie Canal opened. Construction had begun in 1817 and the completion of the canal provided passage from Albany New York to Buffalo New York and Lake Erie. Previously, pack animals had to be used to transport goods - there were no railroads - and the canal allowed goods to be shipped relatively easily and quickly.

In 1853, by the time she was 50 years old, on March 4th, Franklin Pierce became the 14th President of the United States. His son had been killed in a train accident that also involved Pierce and his wife on January 6 - the only of 3 sons to survive until then. Due to the resultant depression and his unpopular policies, he was not re-nominated for President and served only one term.

In 1863, when she was 60 years old, in January, British scientist John Tyndall proved the greenhouse effect - which had been widely theorized, but not proven, by scientists.

In 1875, in the year of Jane Lanyon Nekerwis's passing, on February 18th, the Mason County War, also called the Hoodoo War, began. In central Texas, a German-American mob broke into a jail with a battering ram and lynched two suspected cattle rustlers. Thus began a year of vigilante "justice."
