In 1811, in the year that Johanna Ocallaghan was born, on July 9th, British explorer, surveyor, and fur trader David Thompson posted a notice at the junction of the Columbia River and the Snake River - in modern-day Washington- claiming the area for the United Kingdom and stating the intention of the North West Company to build a trading post there. The trading post was built several years later.

In 1822, Johanna was only 11 years old when was the year that coffee was no longer banned in Sweden. Originally used as a religious drink in Arabia more than 1100 years ago, coffee was banned in many European countries until the 18th century.

In 1854, she was 43 years old when on February 28th, the GOP - the Republican Party - was founded in Ripon, Wisconsin by "modernizers", anti-slavery proponents, ex-Whigs, and ex-"Free-Soilers" - who opposed the expansion of slavery. The first Republican President of the United States was Abraham Lincoln.

In 1869, at the age of 58 years old, Johanna was alive when on March 4th, Ulysses S. Grant became the 18th President of the United States. Previously a Union General, Grant beat the Democrat candidate, Horatio Seymour, 52.7% to 47.3% in the general vote.

In 1911, in the year of Johanna Ocallaghan's passing, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole, along with four fellow Norwegian explorers. After hearing that Peary had beaten him to the North Pole, Amundsen decided to tackle the South Pole. On December 14th, he succeeded.
